The San Francisco, California-based multinational financial services company Visa Inc. is based in the United States. It makes it possible to send money electronically anywhere in the world, most often using Visa-branded credit, debit, and prepaid cards. Visa is one of the most valuable businesses in the world.
Visa does not issue cards, provide credit, or set consumer rates and fees; Instead, Visa offers Visa-branded payment products to financial institutions, which they use to offer credit, debit, prepaid, and cash access programs to customers.
According to the 2015 Nilson Report, a publication that monitors the credit card industry, Visa’s global network, which is referred to as VisaNet, processed 100 billion transactions in 2014, totaling US$6.8 trillion.
Bank of America (BofA) established Visa in 1958 as the BankAmericard credit card program. BofA began licensing the BankAmericard program to other financial institutions in response to rival Master Charge (now Mastercard) in 1966.
By 1970, BofA had given up direct control of the BankAmericard program and formed a consortium with the other various BankAmericard issuer banks to take over its management. In 1976, it changed its name to Visa.
