Women who were denied turnovers sued Texas

Budrigannews.com – According to The New York Times, in the first apparent case of pregnant women suing over restrictions imposed after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, five women who claimed they were denied abortions despite grave risks to their lives or fetuses sued Texas on Monday.
According to court records, the lawsuit was filed in a state court in Austin, the capital of Texas. The filing was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Center for Reproductive Rights, which is supporting the lawsuit. The complaint was not immediately available for download.
According to the Times, Texas, like the majority of the 13 states that prohibit abortion, allows exceptions when a physician determines that there is a risk of “substantial” harm to the mother, in cases of rape or incest, or when the fetus has a fatal diagnosis.
However, doctors have been afraid of losing their medical licenses, paying fines, and potentially spending up to 99 years in prison for not providing legal abortions. According to the Times, the lawsuit aims to clarify when doctors can make exceptions. It has no intention of lifting the Texas ban.
