Walmart Inc., formerly known as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is an American multinational retail corporation with headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. It operates a chain of hypermarkets (also known as supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores in the United States.
In 1962, Sam Walton and James “Bud” Walton established the business in nearby Rogers, Arkansas. On October 31, 1969, the company was incorporated under the Delaware General Corporation Law. Additionally, it owns and manages retail warehouses for Sam’s Club.
Walmart will have 10,586 stores and clubs in 24 countries under 46 different names as of October 31, 2022. In the United States and Canada, it operates as Walmart, in Mexico and Central America as Walmart de México y Centroamérica, and in India as Flipkart Wholesale. In Chile, Canada, and South Africa, it operates as a wholly owned subsidiary.
Walmart has only held a minority stake in Walmart Brasil since August 2018, when the company was renamed Grupo Big, with Advent International, a private equity firm, owning 80% of the company and holding 20% of the shares. In the end, on June 7, 2022, they sold their shares in Grupo Big to the French retailer Carrefour in a deal worth R$7 billion.
