Budrigannews.com – On Friday, leaders of the European Union will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv. The meeting will bring the promise of new sanctions against Russia, but it will likely end Ukraine’s hope of joining the EU quickly.
CONFLICT* According to CIA Director William Burns, the intelligence agency believes that Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion will be “critical” over the next six months.
Russia has picked up momentum on the eastern front and announced advances north and south of Bakhmut, which has endured Russian bombardment for months, determined to make progress before Ukraine receives Western battle tanks and armored vehicles.
Yevhen Dikiy, a Ukrainian military analyst, stated that Russian forces are pushing from both the north and the south to encircle Bakhmut, employing greater troop numbers in an effort to prevent it from receiving supplies and drive the Ukrainians out.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Russian forces will attempt to push Ukrainian forces further away from its borders in order to establish a safe buffer zone in response to the delivery of longer-range Western weapons to Kyiv.
Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia, stated that in order to assist inflicting a “crushing defeat” on Ukraine, Russia’s arms suppliers would “significantly increase” their deliveries in 2023.
Armed Forces, Aid, and Diplomacy* According to a report in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Friday, the German government has given its approval to the transfer of Leopard 1 tanks from industrial stocks to the Ukraine and is in talks about purchasing back 15 Gepard tanks from Qatar to send to Kyiv.
Diplomats said that amid divisions among member states, EU nations will attempt to reach an agreement on a proposal from the European Commission to set price caps on Russian oil products on Friday.
According to a Polish minister, Poland is of the opinion that it will be possible to form a coalition by February 10 that supports calls to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from the 2024 Olympics. This coalition will include 40 nations, including the United States, Great Britain, and Canada.
As part of a crackdown on wrongdoing ahead of talks with leaders of the European Union, officials said, senior military officials are being investigated in two separate cases of suspected corruption.
