SoftBank Group Corp. is an investment management-focused Japanese multinational conglomerate holding company with its headquarters in Minato, Tokyo. The majority of the Group’s investments are made in businesses in the financial, energy, and technology industries. It also manages the Vision Fund, the largest technology-focused venture capital fund in the world with a capital of over $100 billion. Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds are among the fund’s investors.
Masayoshi Son, the company’s controversial founder and largest shareholder, is well-known for his leadership. Robotics, artificial intelligence, logistics, transportation, proptech, real estate, hospitality, broadband, fixed-line telecommunications, e-commerce, information technology, finance, media, and marketing are just a few of the industries in which its investee businesses operate.
Sizeable stakes in Arm (semiconductor), Alibaba (e-commerce), OYO Rooms (hospitality), WeWork (coworking), and Deutsche Telekom (telecommunications) are among its largest and most internationally recognizable current stockholdings. With 45.621 million subscribers as of March 2021, SoftBank Corporation, its spun-out affiliate and former flagship business, is the third largest wireless carrier in Japan.
SoftBank came in at number 36 on the Forbes Global 2000 list in 2017 and is the second-largest publicly traded company in Japan after Toyota.
The flag of the Kaientai, a naval trading company founded in 1865 by Sakamoto Ryma near the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, serves as the inspiration for the SoftBank logo.
Despite the fact that SoftBank does not belong to any traditional keiretsu, it is in close contact with Mizuho Financial Group, which serves as its primary lender.
