Arsenic builds up in rice plants, and there have been concerns that rice contains too much arsenic. Because the bran contains more arsenic, brown rice has more arsenic. Arsenic in rice has been regulated in the European Union, but not in the United States.
Groundwater and soil arsenic levels vary naturally. Arsenic content in rice varies depending on where it is grown. Rice may absorb arsenic from pesticides and poultry fertilizer.
Arsenic was detected in nearly all of the 60 varieties of rice and rice products tested by Consumer Reports in the United States in a 2012 report. Because the arsenic tends to accumulate in the outer layers of the grain, Consumer Reports states that brown rice typically contains 80 percent more inorganic arsenic than white rice of the same type.
According to its 2013 analysis, pasta and rice cereal may contain significantly more inorganic arsenic than the 2012 data indicated; Customer Reports said only one serving of rice cereal or pasta could put youngsters over the greatest measure of rice it suggested for their week after week allocation, because of arsenic content.
Arsenic levels in the urine of women who had eaten rice were 56% higher, according to one study that was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
