Established in 1899, Groupe Renault is a multinational automobile manufacturer based in France. The company makes a variety of cars and vans, as well as trucks, tractors, tanks, buses and coaches, aircraft and their engines, and autorail vehicles in the past.
In terms of production volume, Renault was the ninth largest automaker worldwide in 2016, according to the Organization Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles. The Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Alliance had established itself as the world’s largest light vehicle seller by 2017.
The Renault group is made up of the namesake Renault brand and its subsidiaries, Alpine, Renault Sport (Gordini), Automobile Dacia in Romania, and Renault Korea Motors in South Korea. Its headquarters are located in Boulogne-Billancourt, which is close to Paris. Renault has a 43.4 percent stake in Nissan, Japan, and a 1.55% stake in Daimler AG, Germany. Both of these stakes were sold off in early 2021 to help the company get out of financial trouble.
Since 2012, Renault has been producing engines for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class automobiles manufactured by Daimler, as well as being fully involved in the production of the Mercedes-Benz Citan van. Motrio (automotive parts), RCI Banque (automotive financing), and Renault Retail Group (automotive distribution) are all subsidiaries of Renault. Oyak-Renault (Turkey) and Renault Pars (Iran) are two examples of Renault’s various joint ventures. 15% of Renault is owned by the French government.
Since 2001, Volvo has acquired Renault Trucks, formerly known as Renault Véhicules Industriels. In 2008, the German manufacturer of agricultural equipment CLAAS acquired 100% of Renault Agriculture. As a result of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, Renault is selling its stake in AvtoVAZ to the Russian government.
Beginning in 2011, Renault and Nissan collectively invested €4 billion (US$5.16 billion) in eight electric vehicles over the course of three to four years. Through December 2019, the company has sold more than 273,000 electric vehicles worldwide since the program’s launch.
