The chemical element platinum has the atomic number 78 and the symbol Pt. It is a precious, silverish-white transition metal that is dense, malleable, ductile, and highly reactive. Spanish platina, a diminutive of plata, which means “silver,” is where the name came from.
The platinum group of elements and group 10 of the periodic table include platinum. It has six isotopes that are found in nature. The glass industry manipulates molten glass with platinum, which does not “wet” platinum. When exposed to its salts, it can cause health problems because it is a heavy metal.
