Pinterest is a social media and image-sharing service based in the United States that uses images and, on a smaller scale, animated GIFs and videos in the form of pinboards to save and discover information-specifically “ideas”-on the internet. Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp created the website, which had 450 million monthly active users worldwide as of December 2022. Pinterest, Inc., a San Francisco-based company, runs it.
Ben Silberman and Paul Sciarra’s Tote, an earlier app that served as a virtual alternative to paper catalogs, provided the inspiration for Pinterest. Tote’s business struggled, primarily as a result of issues with mobile payments.
At the time, mobile payment technology was not advanced enough to allow for simple transactions while on the go, preventing users from making numerous purchases through the app.
However, Tote users were sharing large collections of their favorite items with other users. Because Silberman was moved by the behavior, he shifted the company’s focus to developing Pinterest, which allowed users to share collections of a variety of items with one another.
