Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., or Petrobras in Portuguese, is a state-owned multinational corporation in the petroleum industry with its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is more commonly referred to by its portmanteau name. Petrobras, or the Brazilian Petroleum Corporation, is the name of the business.
The most recent Fortune Global 500 list ranked the company at number 183. Petrobras was ranked as the 65th-largest public company in the world in the 2020 Forbes Global 2000.

Under the leadership of Brazilian president Getlio Vargas, Petrobras was established in 1953 with the tagline “The Oil is Ours.” In Brazil, it was given a legal monopoly. Brazil only produced 2,700 barrels of oil per day in 1953.
The company opened its REDUC refinery near Rio de Janeiro in 1961, and in 1963, it opened its Cenpes research center there; It is still one of the largest centers for energy research in the world. Petrobras Quimica S.A., the company’s subsidiary specializing in petrochemicals and the ethene-to-Naphtha conversion, was established in 1968.
In 1953, Petrobras began processing oil shale and developed the Petrosix oil extraction technology. In the 1990s, it began processing shale with a retort of the industrial size. Petrobras claimed in 2006 that their industrial retort could process 260 tons of oil shale per hour.
