The chemical element palladium has the atomic number 46 and the symbol Pd. William Hyde Wollaston, an English chemist, discovered this rare, lustrous, white silvery metal in 1803. He gave it the name Pallas, which was named after the Greek goddess Athena’s name for the asteroid she killed, Pallas.
The platinum group metals (PGMs) are a group of elements that include palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. Although palladium has the lowest melting point and is the least dense of the two, their chemical properties are comparable.
Catalytic converters, which convert as much as 90% of the harmful gases in automobile exhaust (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide) into nontoxic substances (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor), use more than half of the supply of palladium and its congener platinum.
Electronics, dentistry, medicine, hydrogen purification, chemical applications, groundwater treatment, and jewelry all make use of palladium. Palladium is an important part of fuel cells, which combine hydrogen and oxygen to make water, heat, and electricity.
Palladium and other PGM-containing ore deposits are uncommon. The norite belt of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, which encompasses the Transvaal Basin in South Africa and the Stillwater Complex in Montana, United States, contains the most extensive deposits. the Norilsk Complex in Russia, the Sudbury Basin and Thunder Bay District in Ontario, Canada.
Recycling, primarily of used catalytic converters, is another source. There is a lot of interest in making investments as a result of the numerous applications and limited supply sources.
