Newcrest Mining Limited is a company with headquarters in Australia that explores, develops, mines, and sells gold as well as the froth flotation product gold-copper concentrate. It is Australia’s leading gold mining company, and its operations have expanded beyond Australia to Indonesia, making it a prominent international mining corporation.
In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation established the business as a subsidiary. In 1980, the subsidiary changed its name to Newmont Holdings Pty Ltd, and in 1990, it bought Australmin Holdings Ltd, giving it the current name.
Cadia East Ridgeway is where Newcrest produces the majority of its gold and copper in Australia; the Telfer Mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara is the company’s second Australian operation. In addition, Newcrest owns and operates two mines in Canada—Red Chris and Brucejack—as well as two mines in Papua New Guinea—Lihir and Hidden Valley. In the past, it was present in Indonesia and the Ivory Coast. Americas, Asia, and Europe have all been areas of exploration in the past and present.
With a combined production of 2.8 million ounces of gold in 2009, Newcrest and Lihir Gold would become the world’s fifth-largest gold producer if they entered merger talks in April 2010.
The deal was approved by Lihir shareholders (99.86 percent) in August 2010 and the national court of Papua New Guinea (PNG) by the end of the month, paving the way for it. Newcrest will give Lihir shareholders 0.12 Newcrest shares in addition to A$0.225 per Lihir share as part of the $9.45 billion deal. Newcrest was the sixth-largest gold producer in the world in 2015.
