Beams and planks or boards are examples of lumber, which is wood that has been processed into uniform and useful sizes. Lumber is mostly used for finishing and framing in construction. Lumber can be used for more than just building homes.
The term “timber” refers specifically to unprocessed wood fiber, such as cut logs or standing trees that have not yet been cut, in most of the world (particularly the United States and Canada). However, the term “lumber” is still used in England to refer to lumber.
Lumber can be purchased surfaced on one or more of its faces or rough-sawn. Rough lumber is the raw material for making furniture and other items that need to be cut and shaped, along with pulpwood. Due to their low cost, it is available in numerous species, including hardwoods and softwoods like white pine and red pine.
Standard sizes of finished lumber are provided, primarily for the construction industry. Most of the softwood, which comes from coniferous species like pine, fir, and spruce, cedar, and hemlock, as well as some hardwood, is used for high-quality flooring. Softwood is used to make it more often than hardwoods are, and softwood makes up 80 percent of lumber.
