American electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Group, Inc. is based in Newark, California. In 2007, the company was established. On October 30, 2021, the initial batch of 520 reservation holders received delivery of the Dream Edition launch versions.
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid, previously held the positions of vice president of engineering and chief of electric vehicle batteries and powertrains for various vehicle manufacturers. Derek Jenkins, Vice President and Engineer of the Model S at Tesla, Inc., previously held the position of Head of Design at Mazda North American Operations. The business has received investments from Tsing Capital, Mitsui, Venrock, JAFCO, and others.
In October 2016, the business changed its name to Lucid Motors and made it clear that it would be making an all-electric, high-performance luxury car.
Lucid’s US$700 million manufacturing plant was announced on November 29, 2016, in Casa Grande, Arizona, by state and company officials. The plant was expected to employ up to 2,000 people by the middle of the 2020s, initially producing 20,000 cars and eventually producing 130,000 cars per year.
The factory was then supposed to be built to handle a maximum of 380,000 cars per year. As of November 2016, the company planned to begin construction in 2017 and begin producing automobiles in early 2019. On September 28, 2021, the initial vehicles began to emerge from the assembly line.
