The chemical element gold is represented by the symbol Au (from Latin: aurum) and the number 79 in the atom. This causes it one of the greater nuclear number components that to happen normally. In its purest form, it is a bright, slightly orange-yellow metal that is dense, soft, malleable, and ductile.
Gold is a group 11 element and a transition metal in chemistry. It is a chemical element that is one of the least reactive and is solid under normal conditions. In rocks, veins, and alluvial deposits, gold frequently occurs in its free elemental (native) state in the form of grains or nuggets.
It forms a solid solution series with the native element silver (as electrum), which is naturally alloyed with copper and palladium, other metals, and mineral inclusions like pyrite. It occurs less frequently in minerals as gold compounds, typically containing tellurium (gold tellurides).
Although gold dissolves in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, forming a soluble tetrachloroaurate anion, it is resistant to the majority of acids. Nitric acid dissolves silver and base metals, but gold is insoluble in nitric acid alone.
This property has been used to refine gold and verify the presence of gold in metallic materials for a long time, leading to the term “acid test.” In electroplating and mining, cyanide solutions that are alkaline dissolve gold. Gold also dissolves in mercury, resulting in amalgam alloys; this is not a chemical reaction because gold only functions as a solute.
