Meta Platforms, an American company, owns the social networking and online social media service Facebook. It was established in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The company’s name is derived from the Facebook directories that are frequently distributed to students attending American universities.
After initially being restricted to Harvard students, membership gradually expanded to include students from other universities in North America and, since 2006, anyone over the age of 13. Facebook claimed 2.93 billion monthly active users and ranked third in the world among the websites with the most page views as of July 2022. It was the 2010s’ most downloaded mobile app.
Facebook is accessible from any device with Internet access, including smartphones, tablets, and personal computers. Users can create a profile with information about themselves after registering. They are able to post text, images, and multimedia that are shared with any other users who have agreed to be their “friend” or publicly, depending on the privacy settings.
Facebook Messenger also lets users talk to each other directly, join groups that share common interests, and get updates on what their friends and pages are doing.
