BP p.l.c. ( The British multinational oil and gas company (formerly known as The British Petroleum Company plc and BP Amoco plc) has its headquarters in London, England. It is one of the “supermajors” in the oil and gas industry and one of the world’s largest businesses in terms of revenues and profits.
Exploration and extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and trading are just a few of its many vertically integrated operations in the oil and gas sector.
The Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which was established in 1908 as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil discoveries in Iran, is where BP got its start. It changed its name to British Petroleum in 1954 after changing its name to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in 1935. The business expanded to Alaska in 1959, moving beyond the Middle East.
In 1978, British Petroleum obtained majority ownership of Standard Oil of Ohio. The British government privatized the company in stages between 1979 and 1987, when it was majority state-owned. In 1998, British Petroleum and Amoco merged to form BP Amoco plc. In 2000, British Petroleum bought ARCO, Burmah Castrol, and Aral AG.
The name of the business was changed to BP p.l.c. in 2001. BP was a partner in the TNK-BP joint venture in Russia from 2003 to 2013 and held a nearly 20% stake in Rosneft from 2013 until Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
