Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or BMW for short, is a German multinational automobile and motorcycle manufacturer with headquarters in Munich, Bavaria. The company was established in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. From 1916 to 1918 and again from 1933 to 1945, it produced aircraft engines.
BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce are the names used to market automobiles, and BMW Motorrad is the name used to market motorcycles. With 2,279,503 vehicles produced in 2017, BMW ranked fourteenth in global vehicle production. The company has a long and distinguished track record in motorsports, particularly in touring cars, sports cars, and the Isle of Man TT.
BMW has its headquarters in Munich and produces automobiles in the following countries: Germany, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
Following investments made by the brothers Herbert and Harald Quandt in 1959, which saved the company from bankruptcy, the Quandt family is a long-term shareholder of the company, with the remaining shares held by the public float.
