AMC Theatres, originally an abbreviation for American Multi-Cinema; AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. The American movie theater chain AMC (sometimes referred to as simply AMC and in some countries as AMC Cinemas or AMC Multi-Cinemas) was established in Kansas City, Missouri, with its current headquarters in Leawood, Kansas.
It is the world’s largest chain of movie theaters. AMC, which was established in 1920, leads Regal and Cinemark Theatres in terms of market share in the United States.
In 2016, it acquired Odeon Cinemas, UCI Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas to become the world’s largest movie theater chain. It has 7,755 screens in 593 theaters in the United States and 2,807 screens in 353 theaters in Europe.
The business can be found on the New York Stock Exchange; The majority of the company was owned by the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group from 2012 to 2018. In September 2018, private equity firm Silver Lake Partners invested $600 million in AMC. However, the voting power of AMC shares is set up so that Wanda Group still controls the majority of the board.
In January 2021, in the midst of the financial downturns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wanda’s ownership was becoming increasingly diluted as a result of new financing provided by AMC and short squeezes, which led Silver Lake to convert its $600 million debt holding into equity. Wanda’s voting power was reduced to less than 50% when it changed its Class B shares to Class A shares at the beginning of February 2021.
