Budrigannews.com – Early data from Nielsen indicate that Fox’s television and digital properties averaged 113 million viewers for the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, a nail-biter in which the Chiefs won after a game-changing play late in the fourth quarter.

As a result, Super Bowl LVII now ranks third on the list of most-watched television shows. In addition, it surpasses 2022’s showdown, which averaged 112.3 million viewers on NBC, as the biggest audience for the big game in six years.

According to Fox Sports, Rihanna’s Apple Music Halftime Show drew an average of 118.7 million viewers, making it the second most-watched Super Bowl performance ever.

The game’s biggest viewers were, as expected, in Kansas City and Philadelphia. Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Charlotte, Minneapolis, and St. Louis followed with ratings shares of over 70.

Even though linear television may be declining, the numbers once more demonstrate that live sports continue to attract large audiences.

Having said that, the viewership data show that linear is losing viewers. According to Fox, an average of 7 million people watched Super Bowl LVII via internet-based services, making it the most watched Super Bowl in history. That number is up 18% from the previous year.

The events that transpired following the Super Bowl may also be indicative of the transition from linear television programming to streaming content on services like Netflix and HBO Max. According to Fox, only 15.5 million people watched Gordon Ramsay’s “Next Level Chef,” which was heavily promoted throughout the game.

Josef Adalian of Vulture said, “That’s the smallest audience for a post-SB hour in modern ratings history.”
