Instructive story of Ukrainian director about war
By Tiffany Smith
Budrigannews.com – Award-winning Ukrainian filmmaker Alisa Kovalenko joined the fighting on Ukraine’s eastern front when Russia invaded the country a year ago.
As she tells the story of five teenagers who are determined to pursue their dreams despite the chaos of war that engulfs their worlds, Kovalenko returned to filmmaking motivated by the belief that the silver screen can be an equally effective weapon to fight the enemy.
Kovalenko told Reuters, “This cultural front is really important.” It makes it possible for people all over the world to feel and comprehend what other people are going through.
“We Will Not Fade Away,” a documentary by Kovalenko, opens on February 22 in the Generation section of the Berlinale as part of the festival’s overall focus on Ukraine this year.
The film was filmed over the course of three years in the villages of Zolote-4 and Stanytsia Luhanska, which are located in the eastern Donbas region, where fighting has been taking place since 2014.
Kovalenko began filming in 2019, but she stopped in March when she joined a Ukrainian voluntary battalion. After Russian forces bombed the fighters’ base and killed one of her friends, she said she resumed filming four months later.
Kovalenko stated, “I almost signed a contract to join the regular army.” But I thought it was crucial to finish the movie; I couldn’t keep it this way.
Before returning to Ukraine, the protagonists of the movie, which include an aspirant rapper and aspiring motorcycle mechanic, embark on an inspirational walking trip through the Himalayas.
The audience is informed during the credits that contact with some of the teenagers has been lost and that the villages are now under Russian control.
Kovalenko claimed that the film’s meaning, color, and form had been altered by Russia’s massive invasion.
According to Kovalenko’s statement, “I wanted to make a film about children realizing their dreams in a place that does not lend itself to dreaming.” It has evolved into a story about how war kills those dreams.”
Russia denies using a “special military operation” to protect Russian security to target civilians. The war, according to Ukraine and its allies, is an unprovoked land grab.
