Zambian student was killed in Ukraine by a soldier from Wagner
Budrigannews.com – A close ally of President Vladimir Putin, Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed on Tuesday that a Zambian student who died in Ukraine was fighting for his Wagner Private Military Group.
Zambia asked Moscow for additional information and an explanation of how Lemekhani Nyirenda ended up fighting in the war after Russia informed them in September that he had been killed on the Ukrainian battlefield.
According to Nyirenda’s father, he was “conscripted” to fight while he was incarcerated for a drug offense for nine years outside of Moscow.According to his family, it was not clear who or how he was recruited.
Prigozhin’s Concord catering company reported on Tuesday that Wagner had hired Nyirenda.
In exchange for signing up to fight for Russia in Ukraine, Prigozhin and other Wagner representatives have visited Russian prisons and offered amnesty.
In response to a reporter’s inquiry about whether the Zambian had been fighting for Wagner, Prigozhin wrote, “Yes, I remember this guy well.”
Prigozhin claimed that Nyirenda was “one of the first to break into the enemy trenches on Sept. 22” and that he had died a “hero.”
Neither the circumstances surrounding Nyirenda’s death nor Prigozhin’s claim that he had joined Wagner on his own accord could be confirmed by Reuters.
In recent months, Prigozhin has adopted a more assertive presence on the Russian domestic scene, acknowledging that he had founded Wagner, denying his connections to Wagner, and operating in the shadows for years. He has also admitted to interfering in elections in the United States.
