Xi calls for peace in Ukraine
Budrigannews.com – On Wednesday, China’s President Xi Jinping urged former President Dmitry Medvedev to pursue peace negotiations, reiterating his displeasure with the war in Ukraine.
State broadcaster China Central Television said that Xi told Medvedev, who was making an unannounced trip to Beijing, that his administration is “actively promoting peace and talks.”
On his Telegram channel, Medvedev, who is now the relatively insignificant deputy chairman of Russia’s National Security Council, stated only that the talks with Xi were “thoroughly useful.” He said they talked about economic and industrial cooperation as well as the war in Ukraine.
China’s refineries and energy companies have purchased Russian fuel exports that western buyers are unable to accept due to economic sanctions against Russia. As a result of the war, China’s trade with Russia has increased significantly. Chinese companies have moved to fill the gaps in Russia’s economy that have been left by western companies that have shut down. According to official data, China’s imports of natural gas, oil, and coal increased by more than 50% in the first 11 months of the year.
However, Russia’s war in Ukraine has become a significant issue for China’s export-dependent economy at the same time. Households from North America to Africa have less money to spend on Chinese-made goods as a result of the war’s impact on energy prices and disposable incomes. In November, China’s exports decreased by 8.7% year-over-year, the most since the beginning of the pandemic.
China approved a final communique that was highly critical of the war at the G20 summit last month, just weeks after Putin had to acknowledge Xi’s “concerns” about the war in publicly broadcast remarks at their most recent bilateral meeting.

Medvedev’s visit occurs on the same day that Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., in order to address the United States Congress. According to reports in Ukrainian media, Zelenskiy is likely to request that the United States provide it with the ATACMS long-range artillery system, which would significantly increase Ukraine’s capacity to attack targets in Russia.
