Budrigannews.com – Robert Hur, a former high-ranking Justice Department official with experience in sensitive leak investigations, was appointed special counsel to investigate whether President Joe Biden had handled sensitive government documents improperly.
Hur, who was nominated for the position by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday, previously held the position of litigation partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and was the U.S. attorney in Maryland under the Trump administration.
According to Garland, Hur would serve as a quasi-independent prosecutor to determine whether Biden’s classified records from his time as vice president were improperly stored at the Democrat’s Delaware home and Washington think tank.
According to Garland, Hur would investigate “whether any person or entity violated the law.”
As the chief federal law enforcement officer in Maryland, Hur was appointed by Trump in 2018 and will step down at the end of the Republican presidency in early 2021.
Under Hur, the Maryland U.S. attorney’s office pursued the case of Harold Martin, a former contractor for the National Security Agency who stole a significant amount of classified information from American intelligence agencies. Officials referred to it at the time as the record-breaking breach of classified information in the United States.
Martin received a nine-year prison term in 2019.
Before being appointed as the U.S. attorney in Maryland, Hur, who attended Harvard College and Stanford Law School, was Rod Rosenstein’s top aide. Additionally, he served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court William Rehnquist’s clerk.
Rob has been around for a long time. Following Hur’s appointment as special counsel, Rosenstein told CNN on Thursday that “he knows what he is getting into.”
“Superior performance and excellence as a lawyer” earned Hur the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award during his time as an assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Maryland from 2007 to 2014. Before Christopher Wray was appointed to lead the FBI, he also worked as an aide to Wray at the Justice Department.
In a statement released following his appointment as special counsel, Hur stated, “I will conduct the assigned investigation with fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment.” “To follow the facts swiftly and thoroughly, without fear or favor,” he added.
The White House said it would work with the special counsel’s investigation.
