Budrigannews.com – According to school officials on Friday, at least one administrator at the Virginia school where a 6-year-old boy shot a teacher last week was aware that the boy might have had a gun. However, when the boy’s backpack was searched prior to the shooting, no weapon was found.
According to Michelle Price, a spokeswoman for Newport News Public Schools, Superintendent George Parker informed parents at Rickneck Elementary School on Thursday during a virtual meeting that a school administrator learned the boy may have had a gun. Virginia’s WAVY TV first reported the information.
The administrator hasn’t been named, and it’s not clear how they found out that the boy might have a gun.
School administrators searched the boy’s backpack after being notified, but they did not find the gun. There is no explanation for why the gun was not found at that time. Two and a half hours after the boy’s backpack was searched, the shooting occurred.
The young student shot Abigail Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher, a week ago. This week, the police praised the teacher as a hero for still managing to get students out of her classroom after she was shot. Friday, Zwerner’s last known condition was stable, according to the police.
According to police, the boy who shot Zwerner was in the care of the Newport News Department of Human Services.
The police said that the investigation is still going on and that once it is over, they will give the results to the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Newport News, who will decide whether the boy’s mother should be charged with anything.
According to police, the 9 mm Taurus handgun was purchased legally by the mother. However, if it turns out that the weapon was not properly secured in her home, the mother could be charged with a misdemeanor.
According to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew, the young man stole the handgun from his house, put it in his backpack, and removed it while Zwerner was teaching a class. The boy fired once with the gun as he pointed it at the teacher. Zwerner was hit in the chest and hand with a gunshot.
Drew stated that another employee of the school rushed into the classroom following the shooting and restrained the boy while Zwerner escorted the estimated 16 to 20 students out. The gun was on the floor when the police arrived.
Parker previously stated to reporters that the school was unprepared for a 6-year-old bringing a gun to school and firing it. He claimed that this was only the third time since 1970 that a child under the age of 6 had fired a weapon at a U.S. school.
Following the shooting, the Newport News school board announced on Thursday that every school in the city would have metal detectors.
