What you need to know about military exercises in North Korea

Budrigannews.com – According to South Korea’s military, in the latest apparent military exercise near their shared border, North Korea fired approximately 130 artillery shells into the sea off its east and west coasts on Monday.

Seoul claimed that a 2018 inter-Korean agreement meant to ease tensions was broken when some of the shells hit a buffer zone near the sea border.

According to a statement issued by the ministry of defense, the South Korean military sent multiple warning messages to the North regarding the firing.

Although it did not immediately provide a report on the artillery fire, North Korea has been engaging in an increasing number of military activities, such as missile launches and warplane and artillery unit training drills.

This year, the United States and South Korea have also increased their military drills, claiming that they are necessary to prevent the North from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The most important agreement that came out of the months of meetings between Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in, who was the president of South Korea at the time, was the Comprehensive Military Agreement (CMA) in 2018.

However, recent exercises and displays of force along the fortified Korean border have cast doubt on the measures’ viability despite the talks’ long-standing impasse. This year, South Korea conducted artillery drills and accused the North of repeatedly violating the agreement.

For the first time since 2017, North Korea’s long-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) testing was resumed this year, and South Korea and the United States claim that it has also begun preparations to resume nuclear testing.
