What to expect from Biden’s speech
By Kristina Sobol
Budrigannews.com – The State of the Union address that U.S. President Joe Biden will give on Tuesday, three months after Republicans took control of the House of Representatives, may mark the unofficial beginning of the 2024 presidential campaign season.
When is the Union’s state?
At approximately 9 p.m. (0200 GMT Wednesday), Biden will deliver his second State of the Union address. It will be streamed online and live on major broadcast television networks in the United States.
Why is it crucial?
Biden could get his biggest television audience of the year from the speech. Nielsen, a data provider, estimates that 38.2 million people in the United States watched the speech on television last year.
As he prepares to announce his re-election campaign in the coming weeks, that audience will provide Biden with an opportunity to influence public perceptions of the debt limit, social spending, the Russian war in Ukraine, and other topics.
Additionally, it gives him a chance to regain Democratic support, some of whom are concerned about his age and other issues. In November, Biden turned 80, and if he were to be re-elected, he would be 82 at the start of his second term.
What can we anticipate Biden to say?
It is anticipated that he will use the speech as an unofficial start to the 2024 presidential campaign season, outlining a set of policy priorities that may or may not receive support from Congress.
He is likely to talk about how the COVID-19 recession has helped the economy, contrast the priorities of some Republican opponents, and outline “unity” issues that he thinks should bring the two main parties together.
The speech took weeks to write and went through many drafts with Biden, his speechwriters, and administration officials in charge of politics and policy.
The United States’ response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was the primary focus of Biden’s speech the year before.
Who listens to the talk?
The speech is given during a joint Congress session. All members of the Republican-controlled House and the Democratic-controlled Senate are invited. Additionally present are members of Biden’s Cabinet, the armed forces, and the Supreme Court. Partisan rants are possible.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy officially invited Biden to give the address in January. Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also the president of the Senate, will be with McCarthy as he leads the event.
From the balcony, the president invites family and other guests to sit in the First Lady’s view box. The points he is making in his speech may be amplified by their presence.
Additionally, guests are invited by Congressmen.
The mother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols, the Black man who was fatally beaten by Memphis police officers, will be guests this year. Representative Steven Horsford, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, invited them.
Cori Bush, a Democrat from Missouri, stated that she had invited Michael Brown Sr., the father of Michael Brown, who was shot by a Ferguson police officer in 2014 and killed, who was the inspiration for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik will bring Jeffrey Smith, a county sheriff from upstate New York, while House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican, stated that he invited Roya Rahmani, who served as Afghanistan’s first female ambassador to the United States, to send a message to the women of Afghanistan that they had not been forgotten.
Who are the guests of BIDEN?
First lady Jill Biden invited Oksana Markarova, the ambassador of Ukraine to the United States. “Recognition of sustained U.S. support for Ukraine nearly a year after Russia launched its unprovoked attack,” said the White House.
Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has also been invited by the White House. In October, an intruder attacked him in their California home.
In recognition of his efforts to combat poverty and HIV/AIDS, Irish bandleader Bono was included on the list.
Brandon Tsay, who disarmed a gunman responsible for a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, has also been invited by the White House.
Darlene Gaffney, a cancer survivor, is one of the other guests; Amanda Zurawski, who was unable to obtain abortion services as a result of Texas’s ban on abortion, and Doug Griffin, whose 20-year-old daughter was killed by an overdose of fentanyl, both died.
Who exactly is the designated victim?
A single member of Biden’s Cabinet who will be chosen as a “designated survivor” does not attend. In the event of a disaster that impairs the president and his other successors at the Capitol, that individual will be housed in a secure location and tasked with taking over the government.
As of late on Monday, the chosen survivor for this year’s speech had not been announced.
Who will respond to the Republic of Korea?
The Republican response will be delivered by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who previously held the position of White House press secretary under Donald Trump. Typically, that speech is delivered shortly after the president’s.
