We have to bring the Internet back
Budrigannews.com – Since Tim Berners-Lee created the internet in 1989, it has come a long way. He believes that it is time for us to reclaim our personal data in this time of growing privacy concerns.
Berners-Lee and CEO John Bruce created the “Solid Pod,” or Personal Online Data Store, through their startup Inrupt. Instead of having their data scattered across multiple websites or apps, it lets people manage who can access it and store it in a single location.
If they have the technical know-how, users can get a Pod from a few providers or run their own server hosted by web services like Amazon (AMZN). According to Berners-Lee, control and privacy are the main benefits of self-hosting.
According to Bruce, user data is not only protected from governments and corporations, but it is also less likely to be stolen by hackers.
He goes on to say, “I think we’ve all come to realize that the value of the web is embodied in the data that is available on it.” In your new world, where you manage your own data, it doesn’t live in large silos that make good targets for hackers.
The National Health Service of the United Kingdom and the government of the Belgian province of Flanders are testing Inrupt’s platform. The latter intends to give its citizens control over how their personal data is shared through the use of Pods.
The BBC launched an experimental service called “watch parties” in October that lets multiple friends simultaneously stream a show using Pods. The user can see the data that was generated after the watch party has ended, including which program they watched and who else joined, and decide whether to delete or edit the data or allow the BBC to use it.
Executive product manager for BBC Research and Development Eleni Sharp referred to it as “a radically different approach to data management” in a blog post.
Inrupt, which was launched in 2017, reportedly raised $30 million in December 2021, and Berners-Lee claims that it will aid in the delivery of “Web 3,” the next iteration of the web.
Web 3 could change how we use the internet, according to Paul Brody, Global Blockchain Leader at Ernst and Young. People will say that decentralization and Web 3 share a lot of the same ideas and goals, he says.
This startup might be able to assist you in controlling your personal data.
Web 3 will make it possible to own your own data and really control your own commerce infrastructure. In the end, it will have a profoundly transformative effect on users.
Berners-Lee hopes that his platform will give internet users back control.
He asserts, “I believe the public has been concerned about privacy — the fact that these platforms have a large amount of data, and they abuse it.” However, I believe that the lack of empowerment is sometimes what they lack. You need to return to a situation in which you have control over all of your data and autonomy.
