Warning sirens sound all over Kiev
Budrigannews.com – A day after Russia carried out the largest aerial assault since it started the war in February, residents of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, were urged to head to air raid shelters early on Friday as sirens wailed across the city.
The city government of Kyiv issued an alert about the air raid sirens shortly after 2 a.m. on its Telegram messaging app channel and urged residents to evacuate to shelters.
On Telegram, Kyiv region governor Olekskiy Kuleba stated that an “attack by drones” was underway.
A witness for Reuters heard several explosions and anti-aircraft fire 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Kyiv.
In a video address on Thursday night, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy stated that air commands in central, southern, eastern, and western Ukraine stopped 54 Russian missiles and 11 drones on Thursday.
Zelenskiy acknowledged that power outages were prevalent in the majority of areas. According to Zelenskiy, the capital Kyiv, Odesa, and Kherson in the south, as well as the region around Lviv near the western border with Poland, were the areas where the loss of power was “especially difficult.”
He continued, “But this is nothing compared to what could have happened if it weren’t for our heroic anti-aircraft troops and air defense.”
On Thursday, footage from Reuters showed emergency workers searching through the charred remains of residential homes in Kyiv that had been destroyed by a blast, as well as missile smoke trails in the sky. Earlier, officials stated that more than 120 missiles were fired during the assault on Thursday.
According to a statement released by the defense ministry, the most recent attacks resulted in the destruction of ten critical infrastructure installations and more than 18 residential buildings.
Millions of people have been without power and heating in often-freezing temperatures as a result of waves of Russian air strikes targeting energy infrastructure in recent months.
Zelenskiy has been asking the West for more assistance with air defense for months, despite the fact that Ukraine’s smaller armed forces have won several battles against the Russian troops that are invading. The Patriot Air Defense System, which provides protection against aircraft, cruise, and ballistic missiles, was among the nearly $2 billion in additional military aid that the United States announced last week.
While Ukraine claims that its daily bombardment is destroying cities, towns, the country’s power, medical, and other infrastructure, Moscow has repeatedly denied targeting civilians.
In what President Vladimir Putin describes as a “special military operation,” Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 in response to perceived security threats. In an effort to disrupt the campaign, Ukraine and its Western allies have imposed sanctions and condemned Russia’s actions as an imperialist-style land grab.
The eastern frontline towns of Bakhmut and Soledar in Donetsk province, one of four regions Russia claimed to have annexed in September, continue to see the most intense fighting. The others are Luhansk in the east, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.
Even though the Kremlin has stated that they are making progress toward one of the main stated goals of “demilitarizing” Ukraine, Russian forces do not fully control any of the four regions.
Russia has been attempting to capture Bakhmut for months in order to secure a victory on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine.

Zelenskiy stated on Thursday night that Russia “has not abandoned the insane idea of capturing the Donetsk region.”
Donetsk and Luhansk make up the Russian-speaking Donbas, an industrial heartland that was seized by Russia-backed separatists in 2014, but Ukraine’s troops have held on in Donetsk. In the same year, Russia also took over Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.
