Budrigannews.com – The White House said on Monday that private companies have agreed to invest $4.2 billion in northern Central America as part of an effort by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris to reduce migration.

The pledges of 47 businesses and organizations, including Target (NYSE:), account for the most recent figures, which represent an increase from the $3.2 billion that was initially announced in June 2022. as well as Columbia Sportswear (NASDAQ: Company.

In the new announcements made on Monday, Target said that it would spend $300 million more this year in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Columbia said that it would buy $200 million worth of products from the region, which would lead to the creation of over 6,900 jobs over the course of five years.

In March 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden appointed Harris to lead efforts to reduce migration at the U.S.-Mexico border as crossings began to rise at the beginning of his administration. Biden will deliver the annual State of the Union address on Tuesday. Harris concentrated her efforts on addressing the factors, such as a lack of economic opportunity, that prompted migrants to leave the three nations that make up the northern triangle.

The Harris campaign’s efficacy has been limited by concerns about governance and corruption in the three nations, which has led to the cancellation or suspension of projects likely worth millions of dollars.

On a call with reporters, an administration official stated that Harris plans to launch a new phase of the effort called Central America Forward, which will include a push to combat corruption and a greater focus on broader economic development and labor rights. Harris will meet with U.S. government officials and corporate leaders at her office in Washington on Monday.

Since the middle of 2021, there has been a steady decline in arrivals from northern Central America. Under a COVID order known as Title 42, hundreds of thousands of migrants from the region were swiftly expelled back to Mexico during that time without the opportunity to seek asylum in the United States.
