Venezuela preparing to arrest new oppositionists

Budrigannews.com – On Monday, the attorney general of Venezuela said that a court in the country had issued warrants for treason against the new opposition national assembly leadership, all of whom live abroad.
Due to what the opposition claims is government harassment, the three lawmakers appointed last week to lead the assembly after it voted to end Juan Guaido’s interim government have lived abroad since 2019.
Dinorah Figuera, president of the Assembly, lives in Spain with one of her vice presidents, Auristela Vasquez; Marianela Fernandez, vice president, lives in the United States.
Numerous opposition leaders are either exiled or prohibited from politics as the opposition prepares to hold a primary in June to select a candidate to face President Nicolas Maduro in a 2024 election.
Attorney General Tarek Saab stated on Monday morning’s state television that the government has requested that Interpol arrest the legislators.
“One of these citizens lives in the United States, and two of these citizens live in Spain. According to Saab, “We are going to see what the governments of those countries do with our requests.”
Saab asserted that the opposition as a whole had erroneously taken control of state assets such as the oil refiner Citgo Petroleum, and that the lawmakers’ support for foreign governments, including the United States, had led them to violate the constitution.
The opposition is able to control foreign assets like Citgo and $1 billion in gold stored at the Bank of England because of its international support.
Saab stated that the charges include usurpation of functions, treason, and conspiracy.

During a Zoom forum, Figuera said, “Intimidation will not make us give up.” He added that the opposition would continue to work toward unity and focus on talks with the government to find solutions to the country’s crisis. We will continue pursuing and criminalizing our agenda as long as they continue.”
