USA national Hostage Day may appear-insanity or not
Budrigannews.com – Democratic and Republican lawmakers in the United States will introduce legislation on Tuesday to make March 9 an annual day to remember Americans held abroad, just a few days after the basketball star Brittney Griner was freed from her imprisonment in Russia.
According to the text that was seen by Reuters, the bill wants to declare March 9 “National Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day” to raise awareness of Americans who have been unlawfully detained abroad and make it more urgent to bring them home.
In a statement, Democratic Senator Chris Coons, the bill’s lead sponsor, said, “Brittney Griner’s release and unjust imprisonment has only underscored the need for Congress to continue working to safeguard the lives of wrongfully detained Americans.”
Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican, and Representatives Haley Stevens, a Democrat, and French Hill, a Republican, are also sponsors of the measure.
Similar to the black-and-white POW-MIA flag, which was adopted in 1972 to draw attention to Americans held prisoner or missing in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the bill would establish an official “Hostage and Detainee” flag.
Walk 9 is the day on which Robert Levinson vanished in Iran in 2007. In 2020, he was deemed deceased absent a will.
A prisoner swap involving Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a member of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and arms dealer Viktor Bout was made public on Thursday by President Joe Biden.

After Griner was taken into custody in Moscow in February on suspicion of possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil, a flurry of calls for her release and criticism of the Biden administration’s lack of further action erupted.
Paul Whelan, a former Marine who was arrested in Russia in 2020 on suspicion of spying, has not been released by the administration.
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, which is named after an American journalist who was kidnapped and killed in Syria, claims that more than 60 U.S. citizens are wrongfully detained in approximately 18 countries. The United States of America does not provide an official number for the number of its citizens who are held abroad.
