US spacecraft in South Korea may not like North Korea
Budrigannews.com – As the allies intensify their efforts to better counter North Korea’s evolving nuclear and missile threats, the United States Forces Korea launched a new space forces unit on Wednesday.
The second overseas space component of the Space Force, U.S. Space Forces Korea is tasked with increasing the military’s overall space capability and monitoring, detecting, and tracking incoming missiles.
Gen. Paul LaCamera, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, presided over a ceremony to commemorate the formation of the unit at Osan Air Base in the South Korean city of Pyeongtaek. The unit will be led by Lieutenant. Col. Joshua McCullion.
Seoul and Washington are working together to strengthen security cooperation in an effort to discourage North Korea, which has tested intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach the US mainland this year.
Together with the U.S. Space Force, the air force of South Korea established its own space unit this month to enhance its space power and operation capabilities.

A mutual defense treaty was forged after the 1950–53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, and as a result, approximately 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea.
Last month, the U.S. Central Command and Indo-Pacific Command established their space units in Hawaii and Florida, respectively.
