US Senate is preparing a law on public financing
Budrigannews.com – On Tuesday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that the U.S. Senate still has “a lot of negotiating left to do” on a bill that would fund the federal government until Sept. 30, 2023.
Under the current stop-gap spending bill, federal agencies will run out of money on December 16 unless Congress takes immediate action.
In a speech to the Senate, Schumer said, “We’re working very hard on getting something done before the deadline.” He also said that he had been on the phone with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell into Monday night.
Parts of the government would be forced to shut down if Congress did not pass an “omnibus” spending bill that would cover the entire year or, at the very least, a temporary measure that would keep current funding levels.
Both McConnell and Schumer have stated that an omnibus is essential to national security. The military would be compelled to rely on outdated equipment and put a halt to the development of new technologies as a result of a temporary measure known as a continuing resolution, which would limit its operations to the funding levels of the previous fiscal year.
“Both sides are aware that providing the government with full funding is of the utmost importance, and anything less than that poses a threat to our troops and the federal government’s capacity to serve the public. “We don’t want that to happen,” stated Schumer.
