UN to visit Afghanistan due to new restrictions for women
Budrigannews.com – A senior U.N. official said on Thursday that U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths will visit Afghanistan in the coming weeks and will try to meet the highest-ranking officials in the Taliban-led administration, which has banned female aid workers.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the U.N. humanitarian aid coordinator in Afghanistan, stated to reporters in New York, “We regret to see that there is already an impact of this decision on our programs.”
The United Nations warned on Wednesday that many other activities will likely need to be halted as a result of the ban, noting that some “time-critical” programs in Afghanistan had been temporarily suspended.
Alakbarov said that the compassionate necessities in Afghanistan were “tremendous” and the Unified Countries was focused on remaining and conveying help. He stated that the United Nations was actively pursuing the revocation of the ban.
The Islamist Taliban-led administration announced on Saturday the restriction on female aid workers. It follows a ban on women attending universities that was put in place last week. In March, girls were barred from attending high school.

The Taliban held onto power in August last year. When they were in power, two decades ago, they had said that their policies had changed, but they had largely outlawed girls’ education. Internationally, the administration led by the Taliban is not recognized.
