Budrigannews.com – The United Nations warned on Wednesday that many other activities in Afghanistan will likely need to be halted as a result of the Taliban-led administration’s ban on women aid workers and that some “time-critical” programs have been temporarily suspended.

In a joint statement, women’s “participation in aid delivery is not negotiable and must continue,” U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths, the heads of U.N. agencies, and several aid groups urged the authorities to reverse the decision.

“All Afghans face immediate life-threatening consequences if women are barred from humanitarian work. “Due to a lack of female staff, some time-critical programs have already had to be temporarily halted,” the statement reads.

It stated, “We cannot ignore the operational constraints we are currently facing as a humanitarian community.” We will attempt to keep lifesaving, time-basic exercises … In any case, we predict that numerous exercises should be stopped as we can’t convey principled compassionate help without female guide laborers.”

The Islamist Taliban-led administration announced on Saturday the restriction on female aid workers. It follows a ban on women attending universities that was put in place last week. In March, girls were barred from attending high school.

The statement, which was also signed by the heads of UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations high commissioners for refugees and human rights, stated, “No country can afford to exclude half of its population from contributing to society.”

Separately, the EU and 12 nations issued a joint request to the Taliban, requesting that the ban on female aid workers be lifted and women and girls be permitted to return to school.

The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Britain, the United States, and the European Union issued the statement.

According to the statement, the restriction on female aid workers “puts at risk millions of Afghans who depend on humanitarian assistance for their survival.”

Four major international organizations, whose aid has reached millions of Afghans, announced on Sunday that they were ceasing operations due to the inability to run their programs without female staff.

“Comes at a time when more than 28 million people in Afghanistan… require assistance to survive as the country grapples with the risk of famine conditions, economic decline, entrenched poverty, and a brutal winter,” the United Nations stated in a statement.

“Remain resolute in our commitment to deliver independent, principled, lifesaving assistance to all the women, men, and children who need it,” the U.N. agencies and aid groups, which included World Vision International, CARE International, Save the Children U.S., Mercy Corps, and InterAction, pledged.

In August of last year, the Taliban came to power. When they were in power, two decades ago, they had said that their policies had changed, but they had largely outlawed girls’ education. Internationally, the administration led by the Taliban is not recognized.
