UN Human Rights Council is ready to cooperate with China on Xinjiang issue
Budrigannews.com – U.N. basic freedoms boss Volker Turk said on Friday not set in stone to draw in with Beijing over the discoveries of a report gave by his ancestor that said China’s treatment of Uyghurs and different Muslims in its Xinjiang district might comprise wrongdoings against humankind.
One of the most difficult challenges that the new high commissioner has faced since taking office in October has been dealing with China’s human rights record as a powerful member of the “P5” Security Council.
According to Reuters, Beijing pressed Michelle Bachelet, Turk’s predecessor, not to publish the report. She only did so a few minutes before her term ended.
Turk said to reporters at a Geneva briefing, “The report that was issued on August 31 is a very important one and has highlighted very serious human rights concerns,” in his first public comments on the subject since taking office.
“I personally will continue to communicate with the authorities. “Hope springs eternal,” he added, “I’m very determined to do so.”

China, which denies the Xinjiang allegations, has previously stated that it will not cooperate with the United Nations human rights office following the publication of the report.
In October, China’s strong opposition prevented a Western-led attempt to start a debate at the Human Rights Council on the Xinjiang report.
