Ukrainian officials warn the population about a shortage of electricity
Budrigannews.com – After the latest round of Russian air strikes, Ukrainian officials said on Friday that the country’s energy system was stabilizing, but that a power shortage was likely to last all winter.
Since the middle of October, eight waves of attacks against the energy infrastructure of Ukraine, the most recent of which occurred on Monday, have plunged large portions of the nation into darkness while utility workers raced to finish repairs.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated at a meeting of the government, “We will say it openly – that this winter we will be constantly living amid restrictions on electricity consumption.”
He went on to say that he was giving his energy minister the order to make sure that the country’s defense industry, critical infrastructure, and medical facilities would get electricity first.
Shmyhal’s remarks came just hours after Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the head of the Ukrainian state grid operator Ukrenergo, told reporters that “a deficit will exist at least during the autumn-winter period” at the current rate of power generation.
However, he also stated that the energy system was returning to “a stable regime of functioning” and that the latest round of Russian strikes had been mitigated by the Ukrainian air defenses.
Since October, more than 1,000 missiles and drones, according to Kudrytskyi, have struck the energy infrastructure.
