UA orders new Boeing planes including 787
Budrigannews.com – Joined Aircrafts said Tuesday it is requesting 100 Boeing (NYSE:) A significant order for the airline as it seeks post-pandemic growth and replaces older, less efficient aircraft with 100 737 MAX aircraft.
The U.S. planemaker has faced political and production issues for the two planes this year, but the Chicago-based airline’s order for 200 aircraft, with list prices of approximately $43 billion, is a significant boost.
United stated on Tuesday that it is also exercising its options to acquire 44 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery in 2024 and 2026, as well as 443 MAX aircraft for delivery in 2027 and 2028.
United’s big bet on 787 planes shows that it wants to replace older planes and anticipates that long-haul international travel demand will continue to rise. United claimed it was the largest widebody order ever placed by a U.S. carrier, while Boeing claimed it was the largest Dreamliner order ever placed by the planemaker.
Additionally, United stated that it would postpone its previously announced purchase of 45 Airbus A350 aircraft until “at the earliest” 2030. Scott Kirby, CEO of United (NYSE:) said that the company’s current fleet of 787s was one important factor in deciding between Boeing and Airbus for its major widebody order.
“Introducing a new fleet type significantly slows that down when we’re trying to bring on 2,500 pilots a year and grow the airline,” Kirby stated.
In 2022, United added 15,000 new employees, including 2,400 pilots, and the company is on track to add another 2,500 pilots in 2023.
United said that it expects to receive 787s between 2024 and 2032, and it can select between 787-8, 78-9, or 78-10 models. Joined will purchase 787s to supplant its whole 767 armada by 2030 and some 777s, cutting fossil fuel byproducts per seat by around 25% for the new planes.
Andrew Nocella, chief commercial officer of United, stated that the order will enable the company to replace older planes with newer, more fuel-efficient models with more premium seats, more cargo capacity, and faster flight times: Nocella commented on the new aircraft, “We make more money.”
United stated that it will spend $9 billion on capital expenditures in 2023 and $11 billion in 2024, primarily on new aircraft.

In a statement, Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stan Deal stated that the orders “will help United accelerate its fleet modernization and global growth strategy.” United intends to promote the order at an event that takes place on Tuesday at Boeing’s South Carolina factory.
After production issues forced it to suspend 787 deliveries in May 2021, Boeing finally resumed them in August. Boeing’s inspection and retrofit plan, which was required to meet certification standards, was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration in July, and each aircraft is currently being inspected prior to delivery.
When Congress refused to extend a looming deadline to impose new safety standards for the MAX 7 and MAX 10 variants, Boeing suffered a setback last week. According to United, the MAX 10 will make up 80 of the 100 new MAX planes it orders.
After two fatal 737 MAX crashes that claimed 346 lives in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2020, Boeing has been lobbying lawmakers to waive the deadline that applies to its MAX 7 and MAX 10 aircraft. The deadline was imposed by Congress.
Kirby reiterated that United could switch to other MAX variants or purchase additional Airbus planes in the event that lawmakers did not agree with the extension, but he was “pretty sure it’s going to get done in the next Congress” because “it was the right safety outcome.”
As part of its “United Next” growth strategy, United announced its largest-ever order of 270 Boeing and Airbus aircraft in June 2021. This order included 70 Airbus A321neo aircraft and 200 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. On Tuesday, United stated that the A321neo order would remain unchanged.
