U. S. warships sail through the Taiwan Strait

Budrigannews.com – According to the U.S. military, a warship from the U.S. Navy and a frigate from Canada carried out a routine transit of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday.
China, which claims Taiwan despite the island’s democratically elected government’s objections, has been angered by the frequent passage of U.S. and occasionally allied warships through the strait in recent years.
The United States Navy said in a statement that its guided-missile destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class, Higgins, and the Halifax-class frigate of the Royal Canadian Navy, Vancouver, carried out the transit through a corridor in the strait that was beyond any coastal state’s territorial sea.
The Navy statement added, “Cooperation like this represents the centerpiece of our approach to a secure and prosperous region.”
China, which considers Taiwan to be its territory, was outraged by Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s trip to the island nation at the beginning of August.
China then began military exercises close to the island, which have continued.
Since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war to the communists who established the People’s Republic of China, the narrow Taiwan Strait has frequently been a source of military tension.
