U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.50%
Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Healthcare and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.50% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.38%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.18%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 5.44% or 6.30 points to trade at 122.16 at the close. Meanwhile, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 0.92% or 2.23 points to end at 244.49 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.67% or 0.88 points to 132.76 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which fell 3.12% or 4.31 points to trade at 133.84 at the close. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 2.74% or 1.67 points to end at 59.23 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was down 1.69% or 7.95 points to 461.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) which rose 14.41% to 229.95, Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which was up 10.41% to settle at 70.72 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 7.94% to close at 93.25.
The worst performers were Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) which was down 5.71% to 67.48 in late trade, Pool Corporation (NASDAQ:POOL) which lost 5.27% to settle at 349.44 and American Water Works (NYSE:AWK) which was down 5.11% to 133.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Comera Life Sciences Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CMRA) which rose 126.50% to 2.65, ShiftPixy Inc (NASDAQ:PIXY) which was up 53.38% to settle at 0.35 and Cosmos Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:COSM) which gained 50.41% to close at 0.70.
The worst performers were Outset Medical Inc (NASDAQ:OM) which was down 34.05% to 13.46 in late trade, Redbox Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:RDBX) which lost 33.92% to settle at 10.09 and Calithera Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CALA) which was down 30.95% to 0.14 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2019 to 1189 and 121 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2175 fell and 1750 advanced, while 191 ended unchanged.
Shares in Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) fell to 3-years lows; falling 5.71% or 4.09 to 67.48. Shares in Pool Corporation (NASDAQ:POOL) fell to 52-week lows; losing 5.27% or 19.43 to 349.44. Shares in American Water Works (NYSE:AWK) fell to 52-week lows; losing 5.11% or 7.19 to 133.47. Shares in Outset Medical Inc (NASDAQ:OM) fell to all time lows; falling 34.05% or 6.95 to 13.46. Shares in Calithera Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CALA) fell to all time lows; down 30.95% or 0.06 to 0.14.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.91% to 32.69.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.22% or 22.30 to $1,809.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.99% or 2.41 to hit $118.52 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.27% or 1.55 to trade at $120.72 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 1.04, while USD/JPY rose 0.66% to 135.29.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 105.29.
