U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.91%
Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Technology and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.91%, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.55%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which fell 0.27% or 0.40 points to trade at 149.33 at the close. Meanwhile, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) fell 0.35% or 0.59 points to end at 167.59 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 0.50% or 0.79 points to 156.90 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 4.35% or 1.54 points to trade at 33.84 at the close. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 3.69% or 6.79 points to end at 176.98 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was down 3.50% or 4.20 points to 115.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were The Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which rose 3.44% to 55.36, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which was up 2.12% to settle at 275.75 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 2.07% to close at 105.64.
The worst performers were Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 7.43% to 12.71 in late trade, Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which lost 7.28% to settle at 96.22 and CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 6.66% to 89.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bright Minds Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:DRUG) which rose 72.80% to 2.16, Anpac Bio Medical Science Co Ltd (NASDAQ:ANPC) which was up 66.01% to settle at 0.36 and Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which gained 48.18% to close at 1.63.
The worst performers were Advanced Emissions Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:ADES) which was down 39.78% to 3.86 in late trade, Pharvaris BV (NASDAQ:PHVS) which lost 34.07% to settle at 12.14 and Golden Sun Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GSUN) which was down 29.18% to 36.01 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2590 to 533 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2905 fell and 900 advanced, while 167 ended unchanged.
Shares in Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) fell to 5-year lows; down 7.43% or 1.02 to 12.71. Shares in Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) fell to 5-year lows; falling 4.35% or 1.54 to 33.84. Shares in Advanced Emissions Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:ADES) fell to 52-week lows; falling 39.78% or 2.55 to 3.86. Shares in Pharvaris BV (NASDAQ:PHVS) fell to all time lows; falling 34.07% or 6.28 to 12.14.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 15.53% to 23.80.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.84% or 14.80 to $1,748.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.07% or 0.06 to hit $90.50 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.06% or 0.06 to trade at $96.66 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.89% to 0.99, while USD/JPY rose 0.41% to 137.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.72% at 108.88.
