U. S. representatives will visit Cuba this month

By Kristina Sobol

Budrigannews.com – The U.S. State Department announced on Thursday that the Biden administration intends to send a delegation to Havana this month to restart U.S.-Cuba talks on law enforcement issues that were halted under former President Donald Trump.

A spokesperson for the State Department stated that one of the topics that will be discussed during the talks is American concerns regarding counterterrorism. The Biden administration has been looking into Cuba’s inclusion on the U.S. blacklist of state sponsors of terrorism ever since it took office.

The law enforcement dialogue, which began in 2015 under former President Barack Obama and was halted in 2018 under Trump as he reversed his predecessor’s historic detente with communist-led Cuba, will be the first of its kind.

While President Joe Biden has begun to reverse some of President Trump’s harsh policies, he has maintained others, insisting that the Cuban government must improve its record on human rights.

A statement from a spokesperson for the State Department read, “This type of dialogue enhances the national security of the United States through improved international law enforcement coordination, which enables the United States to better protect U.S. citizens and bring transnational criminals to justice.”

“This dialogue does not impact the administration’s continued focus on critical human rights issues in Cuba,” the official added.
