Budrigannews.com – Two acquaintances told Reuters on Wednesday that U.S. Representative George Santos participated in Brazilian beauty pageants as a drag queen 15 years ago, adding to the contrasts that have prompted criticism of the openly gay Republican congressman’s steadfastly conservative views.
The troubled first year recruit senator has likewise confronted calls from individual New York conservatives to step down over manufactures about his vocation and history.
According to a drag performer in Brazil who is 58 years old and goes by the name Eula Rochard, she made friends with the current congressman in 2005 when he was cross-dressing at the first gay pride parade in Niteroi, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Rochard stated that Santos participated in a drag beauty pageant in Rio three years later.
Another Niteroi resident who did not wish to be identified said that the congressman competed in drag queen beauty pageants and wanted to be Miss Gay Rio de Janeiro.
On Wednesday evening, neither the congressman’s press office nor a newly appointed communications director responded to emails.
Santos has positioned himself as a steadfast conservative on numerous social issues, making him the first openly gay Republican to win a non-incumbent House seat.
He has supported the “don’t say gay” bill in Florida, which prohibits discussing sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom.
Republicans are becoming increasingly critical of drag performers and shows, arguing that they are harmful to children.
In response to criticism in October regarding his support for the “don’t say gay” bill, Santos stated to USA Today: I can tell you and assure you that I will always be an advocate for LGBTQ people. I am openly gay and have never had a problem with my sexual identity in the past decade.
In 2005, Rochard claimed that the congressman was a “poor” drag queen who wore a plain black dress. However, in 2008, Rochard claimed that the congressman “came back to Niteroi with a lot of money” and had a showy pink dress to prove it. Rochard stated that Santos failed to win a drag beauty pageant that year.
“He has changed a lot, but he has always been a lying person. Rochard stated, “He was always such a dreamer.”
