Budrigannews.com – During the 2022 midterm general election, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported on Monday that it delivered more than 54.4 million ballots from voters to election officials, with nearly 99 percent reaching their destination within three days.
The Georgia runoff election for the U.S. Senate is included in the total that was delivered by mail between September 6 and December 6. The number only includes ballots with accurate electronic identifiers, not those that the United States Postal Service diverted or handled outside of normal procedures to speed up delivery.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy stated, “The American people can continue to feel confident in using the U.S. mail to fulfill their democratic duty.”
In September, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General reported that between April and June, USPS processed over 69 million identifiable election mail pieces, including 41.3 million identifiable ballots—nearly 10 million more than in 2020. Ballots and materials for registering to vote are included in election mail.
The U.S. Elections Project reports that 112 million votes were cast in the 2022 general election. During the 2022 primary season, USPS also delivered more than 51 million ballots.
According to the inspector general’s office, in the general election in November 2020, 46% of votes were cast by mail, compared to 21% in the 2016 election, both of which featured presidential contests.
The Justice Department stated that a settlement reached by the USPS and the NAACP in December 2021 would prioritize the delivery of ballots in subsequent elections and resolve a lawsuit filed in 2020 regarding election mail.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) agreed to “continue to prioritize monitoring and timely delivery of election mail for future elections” and implement the same extraordinary measures used to deliver ballots in 2020 for the 2022 election.

In 2020, the NAACP filed a lawsuit to ensure the prompt delivery of mail-in ballots. Due to the fact that a record number of Americans chose to vote by mail during the COVID-19 pandemic, several courts ordered the USPS to take extraordinary measures to ensure the delivery of ballots.
