Budrigannews.com – On its website, the digital rights advocacy group Fight for the Future has published an open letter urging the incoming members of the United States Congress to safeguard privacy. Dutzende of businesses and organizations have signed on as cosigners for the letter.
The letter’s authors wrote, “Increasingly, the incredible creative power of U.S. software developers is being chilled by clumsy, misguided legislative and regulatory actions.” This is despite the fact that the First Amendment to the United States Constitution recognizes code as speech, as stated in the letter, and as a result, numerous privacy-preserving technologies were developed in the United States.
The letter specifically referred to Filecoin, ZCash, MobileCoin, and a number of communication protocols as “an illustration of the robust digital future you [new legislators] should foster.” The letter urged lawmakers to uphold end-to-end encryption, safeguard personal data, and uphold privacy rights.
The letter also suggested “working to identify and correct power imbalances.” The authors elaborated:
“We need online spaces that are not owned or controlled by a single person, as they put user privacy at risk. We need tools that give individuals and communities power over their online experience.”
Lia Holland, the director of campaigns and communications for Fight for the Future, said:
“The purpose of this letter is to raise awareness that the previous Congress cannot continue to treat privacy as a human right.” Our legislators need to stop trying to punish open source and decentralized software developers who provide everyday users, vulnerable communities like journalists, activists, survivors of abuse, and minorities, with the tools they need to protect their privacy online. It’s time for them to stop trying to punish them.
The Blockchain Association, DeFi Education Fund, Ledger, Nillion Network, Protocol Labs, and Proton are among the industry leaders with 36 signatures at the time of writing. Acceptance of new signers is still ongoing.
Electric Coin Co. joined @fightfortheftr, @BlockchainAssn, and others in urging Congress to support open-source software development, decentralization, and the right to privacy.
