U. S. imposes new sanctions against Belarus

Budrigannews.com – According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the United States imposed visa restrictions on 25 individuals on Tuesday, including lawmakers, for undermining Belarusian democracy through politically motivated trials like that of exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
On Tuesday, Belarus put Tsikhanouskaya on trial in absentia for treason, which the outspoken critic of Alexander Lukashenko called a “farce and a show.”
According to Blinken, members of Belarus’ National Assembly are among those targeted by Washington for their role in approving legislation authorizing the death penalty for terrorists, a charge that Belarus uses to repress opposition, he claims.
He said in a statement that some have also backed other restrictive laws that take away citizenship from people outside the country who are accused of “extremism” and take property for “unfriendly actions toward Belarus.”
Blinken stated, “We will not stand by as this regime continues to harass and repress peaceful protesters, journalists, unionists, activists, human rights defenders, and everyday Belarusians.”
