Budrigannews.com – Prosecutors in Georgia have until May 1 to respond to a grand jury’s final report on former President Donald Trump’s alleged attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election in the state.
The order was issued by Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney on Monday, two months after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis stated that decisions regarding whether to charge Trump were “imminent.”
Trump made a motion last week to overturn the final report, of which portions were made public. Additionally, the motion sought to prevent Willis’s office from further investigating the alleged interference.
Despite Trump’s claims that the vote was rigged against him, the excerpts indicate that the grand jury came to the conclusion that there was no widespread fraud. It suggested possible indictments for election interference to prosecutors, but none of these were made public.
Trump requested Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state” in public recordings of a call in January 2021. Trump says he did nothing wrong.
“The Head prosecutor’s Office is requested to record a reaction to the movement no later than 1 May 2023,” Judge McBurney said in the request documented on Monday.
Trump, who wants to be the Republican nominee for president in 2024, has a lot of legal problems.
In contrast to a regular grand jury, the special grand jury in this case was only authorized to make recommendations, not indictments. Willis has final say over whether or not to file charges.
