Tokyo owes Apple 98 million
Budrigannews.com – (NASDAQ:) Apple Inc. According to a report on Monday that cited sources, Apple’s Japan unit is being assessed 13 billion yen ($97.82 million) in additional taxes by Tokyo for the bulk sales of iPhoneS and other Apple devices to foreign tourists who were incorrectly exempt from the consumption tax.
The newspaper reports that some Apple stores saw foreign customers make large-scale purchases of iPhones. At least one transaction involved a single person purchasing hundreds of handsets simultaneously, and the store failed to tax at least one potential reseller.
Japan exempts purchases made for resale from the 10% consumption tax, but tourists staying for less than six months are not eligible for this exemption.
According to Nikkei, Apple Japan may have amended its tax return. Reuters inquired about the report and received no response from the company.
More Americans travel despite the storm
During his trip to Japan earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the company had invested more than $100 billion in its Japanese supply network over the course of the previous five years.
