Three accused trying to kidnap governor Michigan
Budrigannews.com – On Thursday, three men who were found guilty of supporting a failed plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor in 2020 will be sentenced, while two of the conspiracy’s leaders will be sentenced before the end of the month.
A jury in October found Joseph Morrison, 28, his father-in-law Pete Musico, 44, and Paul Bellar, 23, guilty of gang membership, firearm violations, and providing material support for terrorism. Each man faces up to 20 years in prison.
In Jackson County Circuit Court, a sentencing hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. local time.

State prosecutors argued that the defendants assisted two other men who were found guilty in federal court in August of orchestrating the kidnapping conspiracy, and the verdict was a victory for them.
The defense argued that their clients were not aware of a plan to kidnap the governor and that the First and Second Amendments of the United States Constitution protected their actions.
Prosecutors say that the three men were part of a conspiracy to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer. They arrested more than a dozen men in October 2020 and charged them with state or federal crimes.
Their dissatisfaction with the restrictions the Democratic governor imposed on residents and businesses during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic was a part of the inspiration for the plot.
Prosecutors said that the group planned to enter Whitmer’s vacation home, kidnap her, and hold her hostage for “trial” on treason charges.
Prosecutors stated that the conspirators hoped an abduction would spark a civil war and violent uprising.
Morrison, Musico, and Bellar are among the seven accused who have either pleaded guilty or been found guilty by a jury of participating in the conspiracy. At a trial in April, two others were found not guilty of the federal charges.
In August, two claimed minute men blamed for contriving to set off a “second American upheaval” in the grabbing plot were viewed as at real fault for hijacking scheme charges. After the first trial in the spring ended with a hung jury, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. were found guilty at a retrial. Two different litigants were vindicated during those procedures.
Later this month, Fox and Croft are expected to receive their sentences. They could spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
It was alleged that Morrison and Musico held tactical training sessions on their property in a faraway part of Michigan. It was alleged that Bellar provided ammunition, coded language for covert communication, and plans for tactical maneuvers.
Prosecutors asserted that all three of them belonged to a militia organization known as the Wolverine Watchmen.
